AZAKE is a member welfare promotion association. It is independent, not-for-profit and non-partisan.  As such,  AZAKE does not participate in politics nor promote any political parties/views.  This is not only pursuant to the legal requirement but more so in pursuant of the moral requirement.  As an association,  AZAKE membership is comprised of Zambians living in Kenya with diverse political backgrounds and interests, including those who are apolitical.  To ensure that AZAKE remains non-political, the affairs of AZAKE are kept in plain sight of all membership including and notably the AGM which is conducted in a free and transparent manner.

Legal Registration

As with other reputable associations and as required by the laws of Kenya, AZAKE is a duly registered association with the Registrar of Societies in Kenya under Section 10 of the Societies Act Cap 108 of the Laws of Kenya. This registration was done on 20th August 2010. On an ongoing basis and as required by the registration,  AZAKE provides annual returns to the Registrar.

Brief History

AZAKE was formed on 20th May 1984 on the day of the official opening of the Zambian Embassy in Kenya by His Excellency President Kenneth Kaunda (K.K.) during the tenure of H.E. Mama Chibesa KANKASA as the ambassador.  The founding Chairperson was Mr. Mute and our very own Mama Osore was the founding Vice-Chairperson. Like all associations during the one-party-state days,  AZAKE was a wing of UNIP and members had to have party (UNIP) cards.

AZAKE chairpersonship has since been held by:

  1. Mr. S. LUBASI,
  2. Dr. Mike GONDWE,
  3. Mr. Oliver CHINGANYA
  4. Dr. Dennis MWANZA (2009 – 2012)
  5. Mr. Bernard PHIRI (2013 – 2014)
  6. Mrs. Chansa KAMANGA-KIGGUNDU (2014 – 2018)
  7. Mr. Kabengele Heribert BREDT (2018 – 2019)
  8. Mr. Kezias MWALE (2020 to date)

AZAKE was officially registered in Kenya on 20th August 2010.  As this was the time of multipartism in Zambia,  AZAKE had no obligation to affiliate to nor support a political party.  In fact,  AZAKE became non-political and therefore independent as the case is today!
